Overland Park City Council approved plans for a new program to provide property tax relief to residents needing it most.
The property tax rebate pilot program will offer up to 75% of City property taxes back to eligible residents.
To be eligible to apply, you must:
- Be an Overland Park resident
- Live in and own your home
- Be current on your property taxes
- Meet very low-income limits from the Department of Housing and Urban Development
Applicants must also have paid their property taxes in full in both December 2024 and May 2025 before the City will provide the rebate.
Possible savings
The average home value in Overland Park is $498,188. Based on the current mill rate, the City’s share of the average home’s property taxes is equal to $832. Under the rebate program, eligible residents could get up to 75% of that, or $624, back.
Priorities for awarding rebates
The City will award rebates based on priority criteria, including:
- Income: Household income at or below HUD’s very low-income or extremely low-income limits.
- Appraised value: Homes that are appraised lower than Overland Park’s previous year’s average property value.
- Additional need: Veterans, disabled people and senior citizens over the age of 65.
- Long-time residence: Homeowners that have stayed at their current address for more than 15 years.
- Priority neighborhoods: Homeowners living in one of the City’s risk-watch neighborhoods.
Applications available in June
Applications will be available online and at in-person workshops starting on June 1 for the first round of funding.
Approved applicants will receive their rebates as checks in the mail by August 15.
If money remains, an additional funding round may open in the fall.
