In 1988, the facility that is now Tomahawk Ridge Community Center opened, with Blue Valley School District‘s Tomahawk Ridge Elementary School in the same building.
The City and the school district developed a concept for a combined community center and school after recognizing the need for an elementary school in the area.
In 2003, Tomahawk Ridge Elementary School closed, and the city took over the full building, moving a portion of Overland Park Police Department operations into the building.
The City renovated the community center space in 2007 and re-opened the expanded community center in January 2008.
Overland Park operates two community centers. Matt Ross Community Center, in Downtown Overland Park, offers fitness facilities, meeting spaces, an indoor pool, and more.
