Two OP athletes to watch in Paris

The American flag hangs near a business in Downtown Overland Park with the clocktower in the background.

Two of Overland Park’s very own qualified to represent the United States in the 2024 Paris Olympics and Paralympic Games!

Leanne Wong will travel as an alternate for the U.S. women’s gymnastics team. Alternates must be prepared to perform at a moment’s notice, and Wong’s consistent performance and mental toughness make her a perfect fit for this role. Leanne also served as an alternate in the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics.

Yaseen El-Demerdash is set to make waves in Paris as he competes on the men’s Paralympic swim team. Yaseen qualified for the Paralympic Games after winning gold in the 50-meter freestyle, silver in the 100-meter butterfly and bronze in the 100-meter freestyle at the 2024 U.S. Paralympic Team Trials.

Both Leanne and Yaseen proudly list Overland Park as their hometown.

To help cheer on these OP athletes and all of Team USA, City Hall will light up in red, white and blue this week ahead of the 2024 Summer Olympics opening ceremony on Friday, July 26.

Bon voyage et bonne chance! (Translation: Have a nice trip and good luck!)
