As the potential for snow and ice creep into our weather forecasts, the unsung heroes of the winter emerge: snow plow drivers.
These dedicated individuals work tirelessly to keep our roads clear and safe. With more than 2,000 lane miles of streets and bridges to maintain, including more than 2,000 cul-de-sacs and 59 bridge decks, our snow plow drivers directly impact the lives of OP residents.
Residents and business owners in Overland Park also play a crucial role in the City’s response to winter weather events.
Here’s how you can help our snow plow drivers:
- Park thoughtfully. If snow is expected to fall overnight, please be proactive and move your car off the street. This ensures crews can navigate your street safely and plow snow to the curb.
- Use snow removal equipment responsibly. Whether you reach for the shovel or fire up the snow blower, be mindful of where the snow is being directed when clearing driveways and sidewalks. Ensure that it doesn’t obstruct the road or create additional challenges for plow drivers.
- If there is a sidewalk in front of your home, clear the snow from it. Consider taking time to help a neighbor clear their driveway or sidewalk so others can get to school, work, medical appointments and other places easily.
- Stay informed and plan ahead. Consider adjusting your schedule to avoid unnecessary travel following significant snowfall or ice. This not only reduces traffic on the roads but also allows plow drivers to work more efficiently. Give crews plenty of room to work. If you’re driving behind a snowplow, please stay back at least 100 feet.
Thank you for partnering with the City to create a safer, more efficient winter for all.
