Three tips to remember during National Work Zone Awareness Week

Spring is here and so is the start of construction season. To promote safe and attentive driving in work zones across the country and in our own community, the Department of Transportation recognizes April 17-21 as National Work Zone Awareness Week.

Each year, the City of Overland Park completes a number of road construction projects to make streets safer and improve traffic movement. As the orange cones come out, keep construction workers, fellow drivers and yourself safe while navigating work zones by reviewing important safety tips and traffic laws.

1. Pay Attention – Distracted driving is the leading cause of work zone crashes. Slow down, watch for workers and refrain from using your phone while driving.

2. Slow Down – Follow traffic signs throughout the work zone. Reduce your speed, and do not exceed work zone speed limits. Fines double in all Kansas work zones, including all major construction projects as well as short-term road maintenance projects.

3. Allow for Space – Maintain a safe distance between vehicles, and change lanes when directed. The Kansas Move Over Law requires motorists to switch to the lane furthest from any stationary vehicle displaying flashing lights on four-lane highways. When passing a stationary vehicle on two-lane highways, reduce your speed and proceed with caution.
