The National Weather Service placed the Kansas City metro, including Overland Park, under a heat advisory until 9 p.m. Friday, July 28. Actual temperatures are expected to reach triple digits with heat index values reaching up to 107 degrees.
As temperatures rise, stay safe with these heat advisory guidelines:
- Drink plenty of water
- Limit outdoor activities
- Stay out of the sun
- Wear light, loose clothing
- Avoid hot vehicles and never leave anyone, including pets, in a parked car
Don’t forget about your furry friends! Provide pets with plenty of water and shade during extreme heat.
Take extra precautions if you work outdoors. Schedule frequent breaks in shaded or air conditioned areas.
Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Hot temperatures and high humidity can cause heat-related illness. Stay safe by knowing the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Symptoms of Heat Exhaustion:
- Heavy sweating
- Weakness
- Pale, clammy skin
- Fast, weak pulse
- Muscle cramps
- Dizziness
- Nausea
Seek medical attention if vomiting occurs, if symptoms worsen or if symptoms last longer than one hour.
Symptoms of Heat Stroke:
- Throbbing headache
- Confusion
- Dry or damp skin
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Body temperature above 103 degrees
- Rapid and strong pulse
- Fainting or loss of consciousness
Heat stroke is a medical emergency. If you suspect someone is experiencing a heat stroke, call 911 immediately.
