Resident embraces City’s Stormwater program for sustainable driveway solution

Overland Park resident Candy Hull learned about the Stormwater Cost Share program through the City’s website. With plans already in place to replace a portion of the asphalt driveway at one of her rental properties with permeable pavers, Hull immediately got to work on the application.

The City of Overland Park designed the Stormwater Cost Share Program to encourage residents and business owners to incorporate stormwater management projects to capture, slow down or soak up stormwater near its source, mitigating the adverse effects of stormwater runoff.

Hull’s current tenants, her daughter and son-in-law, Lucy and Jon Bidwell, were just as enthusiastic about the driveway project.

“It’s great that Overland Park is forward-thinking and has a program encouraging alternative stormwater control,” Bidwell said. “I think anything you can do to integrate your space with the natural Kansas environment is a great idea. This program builds a sense of civic engagement and a sense of community.”

Hull echoed this sentiment, urging residents to explore the City’s offerings: “People need to go online and read what the City offers. You might be surprised!”

Through the program, the City covers a portion of the costs of materials and contractor labor for approved projects, with a limit of one project per household per year.

The program reimbursed Hull $1,000 for her project, offsetting nearly 25 percent of the project’s total cost. The permeable pavers addressed drainage issues and created a multi-use area in the backyard, showcasing the practical benefits of sustainable stormwater solutions.

Hull is already planning her next project: installing rain barrels.

Funding is available on a first-come, first-served basis and is contingent upon approval by the Public Works Department.

The Stormwater Cost Share Program not only helps individual property owners but also fosters a sense of community engagement. By participating in Overland Park’s Stormwater Cost Share Program, residents and business owners can contribute to better stormwater management, enhancing the quality of life for everyone in the community.
