Reduce, reuse and celebrate recycling! The City of Overland Park’s spring mattress collection and Recycling Extravaganza events diverted more than 1,000 mattresses and 100 tons of waste from landfills.
Mattress Recycling
This spring, the City facilitated bulky item pick-up for homes east of Antioch to properly dispose of unwanted mattresses and box springs. The City teamed up with Sleepyhead Beds to clean, sanitize and donate items collected in good condition to families in need.
The City collected 1,185 mattresses and box springs from homes east of Antioch in March and April. Additional collection dates for homes west of Antioch will be scheduled in the fall.
Recycling Extravaganza
The City collected 85 tons of e-waste and 21.5 tons of paper waste at the Recycling Extravaganza on April 22. Vendors from across the metropolitan area collected electronics, clothing, building materials, toys, furniture and more.
If you missed this spring’s event, no worries. Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 14 between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. for the next Recycling Extravaganza. There is no residency requirement to attend this event. View a list of items accepted at Recycling Extravaganza at opkansas.org.
