Overland Park will open three of its five outdoor pools this summer amid a lifeguard staffing shortage.
Tomahawk Ridge Aquatic Center, Young’s Pool and Stonegate Pool will open on Sunday, May 29 during Memorial Day weekend. Bluejacket Pool and Marty Pool will not open this summer.
City staff is in the process of hiring more than 150 lifeguards to serve at the City’s outdoor pools. All lifeguards will go through numerous training sessions before pools open.
At least 75 lifeguards would be needed to safely operate all five outdoor pools in addition to Matt Ross Community Center’s indoor pool.
The City has actively recruited lifeguards since the beginning of 2022. The pay rate for lifeguards recently increased from $10.50 an hour to $13 an hour. Those interested in applying to be a lifeguard can apply on the City’s website.
Pool memberships and passes can be purchased in person at both Tomahawk Ridge and Matt Ross Community Centers.
