After hearing from residents during public hearings on the 2024 Budget on Aug. 21, the Overland Park Governing Body, made up of the City Council and Mayor Curt Skoog, approved the 2024 Budget.
The proposed total Budget totals $430.7 million, which is a 15 percent increase over the 2023 Budget. The budget makes no change to the City’s current property tax rate of 14.573 mills, the lowest of any first-class city in the state of Kansas.
Where the money will go
The budget focuses on implementing recommendations of the City’s Infrastructure Advisory Group, recruiting and retaining a talented workforce, and continuing to implement the City Council’s strategic goals.
The City will use an additional $4 million in revenue from the increased assessed valuation of properties to close an infrastructure funding gap for street, stormwater and traffic improvements identified by a resident advisory committee. The community already approved a dedicated three-eighth cent sales tax known as “OP Moves” to generate approximately $25 million annually for City streets and traffic management systems.
The proposed 2024 Budget also adds supports police and fire recruitment efforts, funds mental health co-responders, adds a building code official to keep pace with development, increases park construction and forestry capacity, and more.
Overland Park’s 2024 Budget goes into effect on January 1, 2024.
