From family fun and creative workshops to Governing Body and committee meetings, the City’s event calendar is packed with endless opportunities to get involved in your community and make memories with friends and family.
Let’s explore! Walk and Read “The Prairie that Nature Built” at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. Start behind the Education Center on the blacktop path, and follow the signs to read the story. The walk is about one-mile round trip with inclines and rocky paths. Participation is included with admission to the Arboretum. Walk and Read will be available through spring 2025.
Farmers’ Market
Spend Wednesday and Saturday mornings browsing aisles of fresh produce, meats, cheeses and specialty products at the Overland Park Farmers’ Market. The Farmers’ Market operates from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Art at the Center
Art at the Center is a unique, not-for-profit gallery space featuring exhibitions from local artists. The gallery is free and open every day at Tomahawk Ridge Community Center.
Plein Air Show

The exhibit captures the beauty of landscape paintings created in the open air throughout the Kansas City area.
Pollination Investigation
Love pollinators? So do we! That’s why we invited the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and Smithsonian Gardens to share their exhibit, “Pollination Investigation,” with us. The exhibit is on display at the LongHouse Visitor Center at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens daily through November.

As you spend time with family and friends over the extended weekend, please plan around closures and modified hours at City facilities on Monday, September 2. While City offices are closed, residents can access information and services, pay fees or report issues using the City’s online platforms.
Labor Day Fit Fest – 9 a.m.-Noon
Get a three-in-one workout punch at Matt Ross Community Center this Labor Day with an energizing trio of classes: Cycle, Body Shaper and PiYo. Led by Instructor Rosemarie, each class is a power-packed 45 minutes of fun and exercise. Limited spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Fit Fest is free for Matt Ross Community Center group exercise members or $5/$6 with a group exercise day pass.

Discovery Day at the Arboretum – 9 a.m.-Noon
Craft time awaits on the first Tuesday of the month at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. Each month, a new make-and-take project unfolds on Discovery Day. Crafting supplies are included, and the projects are available on a first-come, first-served basis to the first 100 participants. The first Tuesday of the month also happens to be Free Admission Day at the Arboretum, so entry into the gardens and this project are all free! The theme for September is “Pinecone Owls.”

Animal Tales with Storyteller Rosie Best-Cutrer – 10 a.m.
Hop, trot and baa with Storyteller Rosie Best-Cutrer at Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead as she brings delightful stories about your favorite farm animals to life. This fun-filled adventure will have you laughing and joining in the animal antics!
Giggle Time Children’s Program – 10 a.m.

Legacy of Greenery Committee – 6:30 p.m.
The Legacy of Greenery Committee develops strategies to increase, preserve and enhance the city’s tree canopy by promoting, planting and maintaining trees and shrubs in the city. The Legacy of Greenery Committee meets at City Hall on the first Thursday of every month.
Read, exercise, and converse with other book lovers at Matt Ross Community Center’s monthly book club. Meet other avid readers to discuss a predetermined book. This group meets on the first Thursday of the month.

The Ordinance Review Committee reviews ordinance amendment proposals with staff before consideration by the full commission.
Planning Commission – 1:30 p.m.
The Planning Commission considers all applications for final development plans and plats, holds public hearings and makes recommendations for final action to the Governing Body for rezoning, special use permits and preliminary development plans. It also prepares the Comprehensive Plan and reviews the Capital Improvements Program. Planning Commission meetings are held the second Monday of every month at City Hall in the Council Chamber.

Civil Service Commission – 6 p.m.
The Civil Service Commission reviews, approves and assists the police department in the promotion process for officers below the rank of Captain. Meetings of the civil service are commission open to the public and meets the second Monday of the last month each quarter at 6 p.m. at Sanders Justice Center.
Neighborhood Executive Committee – 6 p.m.
The Neighborhood Executive Committee develops and monitors the progress of the neighborhood programs.

9/11 Memorial Ceremony – 7:30-9:30 a.m.
Join us in a solemn remembrance as we honor the memory of those we lost in the tragic events of September 11, 2001. The Overland Park Fire and Police Honor Guards will conduct their annual service at the 9/11 Memorial near the Overland Park Fire Training Center on Monday, Sept. 11, starting at 7:30 a.m. This ceremony does not include speeches. It is a time for quiet reflection and a shared commitment to never forget. Visitors are welcome to come and go as they please, reflecting upon this significant day in our history. The 9/11 Memorial light display will remain on all night Sept. 10 and 11. These two light beams symbolize the Twin Towers and emulate the display at Ground Zero. Learn more about the memorial here.
