Nature Photography Art Contest
Capture the beauty of the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens and enter our photo contest for a chance to win cash prizes. Categories include Best in Show Youth, Best in Show Adult and People’s Choice, each with a $50 award. Snap your most stunning shots, frame them up and submit them before the May 1, 2025 deadline. Don’t miss this opportunity to showcase your talent and celebrate the natural wonders of the Arboretum. Winning photos will be displayed in LongHouse Visitor Center from May 5 to June 21, 2025.
“Florals” Exhibit at LongHouse Community Gallery – Daily
Celebrate the legacy of J.R. “Jim” Hamil, a renowned watercolor artist who captured the beauty of the Midwest for over 50 years. This special exhibit at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens showcases rarely seen original works and vibrant floral prints, along with prints available for purchase in the gift shop. Jim’s art brought familiarity and charm to countless homes while solidifying his place as one of the Midwest’s most prolific regional artists. This exhibit is free to view anytime LongHouse Visitor Center is open between March 4 and April 30.
Immerse yourself in the vibrant world of Jhulan Mukharji, a self-taught artist whose lifelong love of painting insightfully blends impressionistic technique with bold expression. Mukharji’s work explores the interplay of color, light and form, and each piece invites viewers into a journey of contemplation and discovery. You won’t want to miss this captivating exhibit that showcases the unique voice of this physician and artist who supports local charities with sales of his artwork. You can view this exhibit March 24-April 27, any time Tomahawk Ridge Community Center is open.

Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead Opening Day – 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead opens for the season on April 1 at 9 a.m. Families can kick off the fun with a barnyard bonanza, featuring hands-on activities, live entertainment, more than 250 animals, playgrounds, fishing, wagon rides, gem mining and more. And, of course, a new batch of adorable baby goats are ready for bottle feeding, ensuring an unforgettable experience for visitors.
Discovery Day at the Arboretum – 9 a.m.-noon
Craft time awaits on the first Tuesday of the month at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. Little explorers are in for a treat as they immerse themselves in the enchanting world of nature and creativity. Each month, a new make-and-take project unfolds on Discovery Day. Crafting supplies are included, and the projects are available on a first-come, first-served basis to the first 100 participants. The first Tuesday of the month also happens to be Free Admission Day at the Arboretum, so entry into the gardens and this project are all free! The theme for April is “Nature Crowns.”

Giggle Time Children’s Program – 10 a.m.
Join us for a delightful children’s program on the first Wednesday of the month. Your little ones will giggle, wiggle and have a blast with diverse performances. From music and stories to puppet shows and juggling, each month features new and exciting entertainers. Best of all, it’s a FREE and fun-filled time that requires no registration – just come and join in the laughter and joy!

Opening Reception for Dr. Jhulan Mukharji’s Art Exhibit – 5 p.m.
Step into a world of color, light and expression at the opening reception of Dr. Jhulan Mukharji’s art exhibit. Meet the artist, enjoy light refreshments and explore a collection that invites contemplation and discovery. All proceeds from artwork sales will benefit Growing Futures Early Education Center. Celebrate Earth Day by volunteering to remove trash and debris from our parks and waterways, restoring the natural beauty of Overland Park. A substantial amount of trash and debris ends up in our streams. Volunteers will pick up the debris, bag it and pile the bags so that our Parks and Recreation crews can pick up and properly dispose of the collected trash. Supplies will be provided. Planning Commission – 1:30 p.m.
The Planning Commission considers all applications for final development plans and plats, holds public hearings and makes recommendations for final action to the Governing Body for rezoning, special use permits and preliminary development plans. It also prepares the Comprehensive Plan and reviews the Capital Improvements Program. Planning Commission meetings are held the second Monday of every month at City Hall in the Council Chamber.
Neighborhood Executive Committee Officers Board – 5:30 p.m.
The Neighborhood Executive Committee develops and monitors the progress of the neighborhood programs.
Mayor and Council meetings are held on the first and third Monday of the month at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall in the council chamber.

Free Concert by Minneapolis South High Music Students – 11 a.m.
Experience a special performance by the talented students of Minneapolis South High School Music Department during their Kansas City music tour! Enjoy an hour of music featuring their choir, orchestra, wind ensemble and modern band at the LongHouse Visitor Center at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. Environmental Advisory Council – 6 p.m.
The Environmental Advisory Council studies environmental issues while supporting and promoting new and existing programs and developing educational programs that are beneficial to individuals and businesses in our community with respect to environmental issues. This council meets on the second Thursday at 6 p.m.

Farmers’ Market Opening Day – 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m.
Get ready for the return of fresh produce, meats, cheeses, and specialty items as the Overland Park Farmers’ Market kicks off its season on Saturday, April 19. The 2025 market season will take place at Matt Ross Community Center, 8101 Marty Street, to allow space for the Farmers’ Market and Downtown Gather Space Improvement Project.
Construction Debris Drop-Off – 8 a.m.-2 p.m.
Disposing of old decking, fencing, lumber, railroad ties and other construction and demolition debris can be difficult. We can take some of those items off your hands. Drop these items off at Shawnee Mission west High School, 8800 W. 85th St. Residents are limited to one visit and no more than a truck and medium trailer amount of waste. Staff will be available to assist with unloading, but residents should be prepared to unload their material at the event.
Large Appliance Recycling – 9 a.m.-noon
Visitors can drop off large appliances (refrigerators, ovens, dehumidifiers, dryers, etc.). Electronics and small appliances like TVs, computers and microwaves will not be accepted and can be taken to some of our other events. No residency requirement. This event is open to everyone!
Firefighters and You Open House – 1-3 p.m.
Join OPFD for an exciting open house at the Overland Park Fire Training Center! This family-friendly event offers a behind-the-scenes look at firefighter training, live demonstrations, hands-on activities and safety presentations. Meet our firefighters, explore fire trucks, and learn essential fire prevention tips. Public Information Meeting: 2024 Major Storm Sewer Repair – 5:30 p.m.
The City of Overland Park will conduct a third public meeting regarding the 2024 Major Storm Sewer Repair project. This project consists of replacing aging and damaged storm sewer system infrastructure to ensure the efficient conveyance of stormwater. The public information meeting will be held on Thursday, April 24, 2025, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose room of the Myron E. Scafe building.
