As we approach the end of the year, several large construction projects across Overland Park are nearing completion, paving the way for enhanced road safety, smoother traffic flow and a stronger infrastructure for residents and visitors alike.
Take a look at some of the key projects set to wrap up soon:
Metcalf Avenue (91st to 99th Street)
A key project focuses on Metcalf Avenue, between 91st and 99th Streets. This stretch underwent significant improvements, including:
- Mill and overlay to refresh the road surface.
- Raised medians with landscaping and irrigation.
- New curbs, gutters and storm sewer upgrades for better water management.
- Underground power lines to replace the overhead lines.
- Installation of decorative traffic signals and street lighting.
Crews are working on the finishing touches, including laying sod and finishing new pavement markings. The project is expected to wrap up ahead of schedule later this month.
103rd and Antioch Street Improvements
The City began transforming the area around 103rd and Antioch last year to support changing traffic patterns and meet zoning requirements as part of the Brookridge Redevelopment Agreement. If you drive near this intersection often, you likely noticed significant changes, including additional turn lanes and traffic signals, storm sewer modifications and underground relocation of existing overhead utilities.
Crews are placing concrete pavers in the median and working on permanent pavement markings and signs. Sod will be placed along the projects in the next couple of weeks. The project is set to finish on time in November.
2024 Bridge Maintenance Project
As part of the 2024 Bridge Maintenance Project, several bridges throughout the city received vital maintenance and upgrades this year, including the Roe Avenue Bridge south of 103rd Street, the 127th Street Bridge west of Nall Avenue and the 109th Street Bridge over Indian Creek in Corporate Woods.
Work on the Roe Avenue Bridge and the 127th Street Bridge is complete, extending the useful life of both bridges. The 109th Street Bridge over Indian Creek is undergoing comprehensive deck repair, removal and reconstruction of the raised median, and approach slab repairs and epoxy seal surfacing. While this bridge is currently closed, lanes are expected to reopen upon the completion of the project in November.
The 2024 Bridge Maintenance project received funds from the OP Moves sales tax, a dedicated three-eighth cent sales tax approved by Overland Park residents in June 2023 to fund maintenance and improvements to City streets and traffic management systems. The OP Moves sales tax replaced the City’s dedicated one-eighth cent (0.125 percent) sales tax with a three-eighths cent (0.375 percent) dedicated sales tax in April 2024. Revenue from the tax will be dedicated to improving City infrastructure.
