Hot off the grill; Essential safety tips for your next BBQ - City of Overland Park, Kansas
Winter Weather Operations

City snow crews are actively clearing snow. It can take crews up to 48 hours after the snowfall ends to clear all streets. We expect to have all neighborhood streets plowed before Thursday morning, but ask residents to wait until all routes are complete before submitting snow removal requests through OPCares.

While streets are being plowed, residents can help by:

  • Moving vehicles off the street until it has been plowed to leave a clear path for plow drivers.
  • Waiting until plows have made at least one clear path before driving on a street.
  • Removing basketball goals, trash cans and other obstacles from the curb or driveway entrances.

Hot off the grill; Essential safety tips for your next BBQ

We all know Kansas City loves its barbecue! Grilling is one of the most popular summertime activities. Before you fire up the grill, here are essential tips and important reminders for a safe grilling season:

  1. Location, location, location. Place your grill on a level surface, and position it away from siding, deck railings or branches. Only use grills outdoors.
  2. Keep your grill clean. Empty the grease tray regularly to prevent buildup of flammable liquids.
  3. Be alert. Don’t operate a grill if you’re tired or have been drinking. Never leave a grill unattended while it is in use.

Gas vs. Charcoal

If you use a gas grill, check the propane tank for leaks before lighting the grill. Mix two-thirds water and one-third soap together, and apply the solution to the hose and connections. If bubbles form, there is a leak. Turn off the gas immediately and have it repaired or replaced before using the grill.

If you use a charcoal grill, only use charcoal starter fluid designed for grilling. Do not use gasoline or other flammable liquids to start the fire. Never add starter fluid once the fire has started.

Properly dispose of cooled charcoal by emptying coals into a metal container and sealing tightly with a lid. Place the container away from any flammable objects and materials.

City Code

City code prohibits those living in apartments and condominium communities from using gas or charcoal grills within 10 feet of the building or any other combustible construction, unless that building has an automated sprinkler system.
