Five tips to help snow plow drivers keep roads safe this winter

Plow clears snow on road in front of City Hall.

Winter is here, and Overland Park’s snow plow drivers are ready to roll. OP’s dedicated crews keep more than 2,000 lane miles of streets and bridges and over 2,000 cul-de-sacs clear for safe travel.

It’s not just up to them. Residents and businesses play an essential role in keeping our roads safe and passable during winter weather. As winter weather starts to sneak into the forecast, keep these five strategies in mind to help out our snow crews:

  1. Avoid parking in the street.

If snow is on the way, avoid parking in the street to give plows plenty of room to maneuver. Keeping curbs accessible helps crews reach every part of the roadway safely and efficiently.

  1. Be mindful of snow removal.

When shoveling or using a snow blower, direct snow away from streets to avoid adding obstacles for plows. Keeping sidewalks clear also helps your neighbors get to school, work or other destinations safely.

  1. Stay safe on the roads.

Allow plenty of room for snow plows by staying at least 100 feet back. Plow drivers need space to clear lanes safely and this distance helps protect everyone on the road.

  1. Adjust plans if you can.

After heavy snow or ice, consider postponing non-essential trips or errands to reduce traffic and give plows the space they need to clear roads thoroughly.

  1. Stay informed.

For updates on snow operations, follow the City’s social media channels. Find additional information on winter storm response and track plows at opkansas.org/Snow.

Thank you for helping us make winter in Overland Park safer for everyone!
