Explore local government with Teen Council

Students, have you ever wondered what it’s like to be a part of your city’s decision-making process?

If you are a high school student living in or attending school in Overland Park, Teen Council offers an inside look at your local government and the opportunity to hone essential leadership skills.

A gateway to civic engagement, the Overland Park Teen Council allows high school students to dive into the heart of local government. Participants interact with various city departments, attend committee meetings, lead and participate in service projects and form meaningful connections with elected officials.

To be eligible for the program, teens must live or attend high school in Overland Park and be committed to participating in all required activities. The group meets one to two times monthly throughout the school year.

After completing at least one year of Teen Council, participants may be eligible for leadership positions, including Teen Council president or serving as a youth liaison on one of three City committees:

  • Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee
  • Environmental Advisory Committee
  • Legacy of Greenery Committee

Applications for the 2023-2024 Teen Council program are due by 8 a.m. on Aug. 28.
