City to host public hearings for 2024 budget

The community has two final opportunities next week to get involved in the City’s budgeting process.

There will be two public hearings, and the budget is scheduled for City Council adoption, at the Monday, August 21 City Council meeting.

One public hearing is the City’s standard for its budget process, providing residents an opportunity to share their thoughts on priorities for City programs, services and events.

The second public hearing announces and allows residents to weigh in on the City’s intention to exceed the revenue-neutral rate.

The public hearings are scheduled for the City Council meeting at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Aug. 21 in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 8500 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park, Kansas, 66212.

No signup is required; Residents can simply attend the meeting and speak during the public hearing.

Mill levy steady; revenue to fund infrastructure

The proposed total Budget totals $430.7 million, which is a 15% increase over the 2023 Budget. The recommended budget makes no change to the City’s current property tax rate of 14.573 mills, which remains the lowest municipal mill levy in the state of Kansas.

The City expects the assessed valuation of properties in Overland Park to increase by about 10.7% in 2024. Increases in property valuation throughout Overland Park would mean the City could capture an additional approximately $6.9 million in revenue.

Most of this funding will be applied to close the remaining funding gap and fully fund a resident committee’s recommendations to maintain and improve the City’s streets and traffic management and stormwater systems.
