Traveling this spring and summer?
Whether it’s a weekend getaway or a long vacation, a few simple precautions can help protect your home while you’re away.
Here’s how to keep your home secure during your travels:
- Lock the doors and windows. Be sure your garage door makes it all the way down before you pull away.
- Stop the mail. Mail that piles up while you’re out of town is a giveaway that no one is home.
- Put lights on a timer or a smart switch.
- Consider a doorbell camera or security system.
- Hire a house sitter. In addition to watering plants and feeding the cat, have them leave lights on inside and park in the driveway when they stop by, creating the appearance of someone being home.
- Let a trusted neighbor know you’ll be gone. There is always value in having a friend who can contact you in case of an emergency.
- Don’t post from the beach. Wait to share your travel photos until you get home so strangers don’t know where you are or when you’ll be back.
The Police Department offers complimentary home security surveys to make recommendations to increase safety and security for your home. Visit opkansas.org/Security or call 913-890-1426 to make an appointment.
