Victim Support Services

The victim specialists of the Overland Park Police Department’s Victim Services Unit advocate for crime victims and their families by providing trauma-informed and victim-centered services, referrals, information, and support. Our victim specialists primarily assist survivors of violent crimes, such as domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, human trafficking, aggravated assault, robbery and homicide.

Victim specialists can assist with the following services:

  • Informing victims of their rights.
  • Assisting with the victim compensation process.
  • Connecting victims with community resources.
  • Accompanying victims during court hearings and investigative interviews.
  • Acting as a liaison for victims and their families when interacting with the criminal justice system.
  • Providing temporary crisis intervention and making appropriate referrals.
  • Creating individualized safety plans.
  • Assisting victims with the protection order application process.

What to Do if You are a Crime Victim

If you are a victim of crime, we suggest you do the following:

  • Take steps to keep yourself and your family members safe from the suspect.
  • Seek medical assistance if you have been assaulted or injured.
  • Notify someone you trust of your situation and location should you move from your current residence.
  • Seek the assistance of crime victim advocacy services to help start the recovery process and better understand your rights as a victim and the resources and support available.

Victim Compensation

If you are a crime victim, you may be eligible for compensation from one or more of the following sources:

  • Insurance Company: You or another party may have an insurance policy that provides coverage for personal injury or property loss due to crime. Contact your insurance company for details.
  • Kansas State Crime Victim Compensation Board: Victims may receive financial assistance for loss of earnings and out-of-pocket loss for injuries sustained as a direct result of violent crime. To determine eligibility, call 785-296-2359.
  • Court-Ordered Restitution: If you report a crime and the offender enters a diversion or is tried, found guilty, and placed on probation or parole, the court, in certain circumstances, may order the offender to make restitution, that is, pay the costs of your injuries or damages.
  • Small Claims/Civil Court: Civil remedies may be available, in addition to, or in lieu of criminal penalties. For more information, contact the 10th Judicial District Small Claims Court at 913-715-3354.
