Council Member Richard Borlaza was elected to the City Council in November 2023.
Borlaza grew up in Johnson County and attended Shawnee Mission schools. He has two brothers and one sister as well as three nephews who currently attend or will also attend Shawnee Missions schools.
Professionally, Borlaza is the IT Director and Technology Teacher at Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy, currently serving in his 13th school year. He teaches two upper school classes, including an independent study class, Tech Ed, and an eSports Gaming Concepts class.
In pursuit of making a positive impact, Borlaza actively sought opportunities to serve nonprofit organizations in the community, including KC Tenants, where he volunteered his time and skills to advocate for affordable housing and fair tenant rights. This led him to Tikkun-KC, a nonprofit organization dedicated to renovating blighted urban housing for deserving homeowners.
