September ushers in a season of vibrant fall City events, offering residents and visitors a chance to enjoy crisp autumn air. With family-friendly activities, local markets and seasonal celebrations, there’s something for everyone to savor as summer fades into fall.

From family fun and creative workshops to Governing Body and committee meetings, the City’s event calendar is packed with endless opportunities to get involved in your community and make memories with friends and family.

Walk and Read

Let’s explore! Walk and Read “The Prairie that Nature Built” at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. Start behind the Education Center on the blacktop path, and follow the signs to read the story. The walk is about one-mile round trip with inclines and rocky paths. Participation is included with admission to the Arboretum. Walk and Read will be available through spring 2025.

Farmers’ Market
Spend Wednesday and Saturday mornings browsing aisles of fresh produce, meats, cheeses and specialty products at the Overland Park Farmers’ Market. The Farmers’ Market operates from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Art at the Center
Art at the Center is a unique, not-for-profit gallery space featuring exhibitions from local artists. The gallery is free and open every day at Tomahawk Ridge Community Center.

Plein Air Show
August 7-September 22
The exhibit captures the beauty of landscape paintings created in the open air throughout the Kansas City area.

Pollination Investigation
Love pollinators? So do we! That’s why we invited the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and Smithsonian Gardens to share their exhibit, “Pollination Investigation,” with us. The exhibit is on display at the LongHouse Visitor Center at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens daily through November.

Monday, September 2

City Offices Closed

As you spend time with family and friends over the extended weekend, please plan around closures and modified hours at City facilities on Monday, September 2. While City offices are closed, residents can access information and services, pay fees or report issues using the City’s online platforms.   

Labor Day Fit Fest – 9 a.m.-Noon

Get a three-in-one workout punch at Matt Ross Community Center this Labor Day with an energizing trio of classes: Cycle, Body Shaper and PiYo. Led by Instructor Rosemarie, each class is a power-packed 45 minutes of fun and exercise. Limited spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Fit Fest is free for Matt Ross Community Center group exercise members or $5/$6 with a group exercise day pass.

Tuesday, September 3

Discovery Day at the Arboretum – 9 a.m.-Noon

Craft time awaits on the first Tuesday of the month at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. Each month, a new make-and-take project unfolds on Discovery Day. Crafting supplies are included, and the projects are available on a first-come, first-served basis to the first 100 participants. The first Tuesday of the month also happens to be Free Admission Day at the Arboretum, so entry into the gardens and this project are all free! The theme for September is “Pinecone Owls.”

Wednesday, September 4

Animal Tales with Storyteller Rosie Best-Cutrer – 10 a.m.

Hop, trot and baa with Storyteller Rosie Best-Cutrer at Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead as she brings delightful stories about your favorite farm animals to life. This fun-filled adventure will have you laughing and joining in the animal antics!

Giggle Time Children’s Program – 10 a.m.

Join us for a delightful children’s program on the first Wednesday of the month. From music and stories to puppet shows, Giggle Time features new and exciting entertainers. Come and join in the laughter and joy at this free event at Tomahawk Ridge Community Center!

Community Development Committee – 7 p.m.

Community Development Committee meetings are held every first Wednesday of every month at City Hall in Conference Room 1.

Thursday, September 5

Arboretum New Volunteer Orientation – 10 a.m.

This is for new volunteers wishing to serve regularly at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. We will discuss all volunteer opportunities, collect required paperwork and introduce you to the Arboretum.

Wine Tasting on the Terrace – 6 p.m.

Relax and unwind as you enjoy wine and food samples from local vendors while surrounded by the beauty of the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens.

Legacy of Greenery Committee – 6:30 p.m.

The Legacy of Greenery Committee develops strategies to increase, preserve and enhance the city’s tree canopy by promoting, planting and maintaining trees and shrubs in the city. The Legacy of Greenery Committee meets at City Hall on the first Thursday of every month.

REC Book Club – 7 p.m.

Read, exercise, and converse with other book lovers at Matt Ross Community Center’s monthly book club. Meet other avid readers to discuss a predetermined book. This group meets on the first Thursday of the month. 

Friday, September 6

Summer Movie Nights at the Arboretum: “Elemental” – 7 p.m.

This exciting series will bring families, friends and movie lovers together for unforgettable evenings under the stars at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. With stunning garden views and fan-favorite films, it’s the perfect way to enjoy a warm summer night. Gates open at 7 p.m. and the movie begins at dusk or around 8:30 p.m. 

Saturday, September 7

Papaw Hike – 9:15 a.m.

The Pawpaw Walk program at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens offers a unique blend of guided nature exploration and educational discovery, centered around the fascinating pawpaw tree. You’ll embark on an immersive adventure through the Arboretum’s lush forests where pawpaws thrive. Learn about the botany, ecology and cultural heritage of these remarkable trees as you hike through their natural habitat.

Monday, September 9

Ordinance Review Committee – 11:45 a.m.

The Ordinance Review Committee reviews ordinance amendment proposals with staff before consideration by the full commission. 

Planning Commission – 1:30 p.m.

The Planning Commission considers all applications for final development plans and plats, holds public hearings and makes recommendations for final action to the Governing Body for rezoning, special use permits and preliminary development plans. It also prepares the Comprehensive Plan and reviews the Capital Improvements Program. Planning Commission meetings are held the second Monday of every month at City Hall in the Council Chamber.

City Council – 7:30 p.m.

Mayor and Council meetings are held on the first and third Monday of the month at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall in the council chamber.

Tuesday, September 10

Public Information Meeting: Switzer Road Improvements, 167th to 179th Street – 5:30-7 p.m.

The City of Overland Park will conduct a second public meeting regarding the Switzer Road Improvements, 167th to 179th Street project.  The public information meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, from 5:30-7 p.m. at LongHouse Visitor Center in the Community Room.

Civil Service Commission – 6 p.m.

The Civil Service Commission reviews, approves and assists the police department in the promotion process for officers below the rank of Captain. Meetings of the civil service are commission open to the public and meets the second Monday of the last month each quarter at 6 p.m. at Sanders Justice Center.

Neighborhood Executive Committee – 6 p.m.

The Neighborhood Executive Committee develops and monitors the progress of the neighborhood programs.

Board of Zoning Appeals – 7 p.m.

The Board of Zoning Appeals considers requests for relief from the requirements of the zoning ordinance and meets monthly, generally on the second Tuesday. The Board of Zoning Appeals meets at City Hall.

Wednesday, September 11

9/11 Memorial Ceremony – 7:30-9:30 a.m.
Join us in a solemn remembrance as we honor the memory of those we lost in the tragic events of September 11, 2001. The Overland Park Fire and Police Honor Guards will conduct their annual service at the 9/11 Memorial near the Overland Park Fire Training Center on Monday, Sept. 11, starting at 7:30 a.m. This ceremony does not include speeches. It is a time for quiet reflection and a shared commitment to never forget. Visitors are welcome to come and go as they please, reflecting upon this significant day in our history. The 9/11 Memorial light display will remain on all night Sept. 10 and 11. These two light beams symbolize the Twin Towers and emulate the display at Ground Zero. Learn more about the memorial here.

Public Safety Committee meetings are held every second Wednesday of every month at City Hall in Conference Room 1.

Thursday, September 12

Nature Storytime – 10:30 a.m.

Immerse yourself in the beauty of the outdoors with Nature Storytime at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, presented by Stepping Stones KC. Join us for a delightful blend of music, movement, and adventure as we explore the wonders of nature. These gatherings are targeted toward little nature lovers, ages 1-6. Registration and caregiver presence is required.

Environmental Advisory Council – 6 p.m.

The Environmental Advisory Council studies environmental issues while supporting and promoting new and existing programs and developing educational programs that are beneficial to individuals and businesses in our community with respect to environmental issues. This council meets on the second Thursday at 6 p.m.

Designed for beginners and seasoned artists alike, this series at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens focuses on cultivating the essential habit of maintaining a visual journal through sketchbook keeping. Build your skills by attending each session, or select fewer sessions as your schedule allows. Please register online.

Movie Night at the Farmstead: “Frozen” – 5-10 p.m.

Grab a comfy blanket and head to the Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead lawn for an enchanting evening of free outdoor fun and a movie on the big outdoor screen. Come early and join in the pre-movie activities – games, laughter and good times await. Meet Elsa in person from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Disney’s “Frozen” will begin once the sun sets, around 8 p.m. Don’t miss out on this family-friendly event!

Do you have old construction debris cluttering up your space? This weekend, take the opportunity to clear out those unwanted items responsibly! Join us at the Blue Valley Switzer District Activity Complex on Saturday for the Construction Debris Drop-Off. Find a list of items accepted at this event here

Electronics Recycling + Shredding Event – 9 a.m-Noon

Recycle your electronics (computers, TVs, phones, rechargeable batteries, stereos, etc.), small appliances (microwaves, toasters, etc.) and most items powered with a cord or a battery at this event held at Cottonwood Point Elementary School. Documents for shredding will also be accepted for a suggested donation of $5 per box.

Experience a magical evening under the moonlight at the Moon and Water Lantern Festival at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. Stained Glass Workshop for Beginners – 1-4 p.m.

Join us in making a stained glass hanging at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens!Learn beginning stained glass techniques with lead-free solder and flux. Tara from Lost and Found Design will be teaching this workshop. Due to the nature of working with a soldering iron and chemicals, this workshop is for adults 18 and older, and we will be wearing protective gloves, masks and protective eyewear as needed.
