The City of Overland Park Governing Body endorsed the 79th Street Corridor Plan, marking a key step in improving connectivity along 79th Street in northern Overland Park.
The plan outlines steps to enhance transportation options and safety along the corridor by improving accessibility for walking and biking and increasing safety at key crossings. It also aims to slow traffic speeds, preserve street trees and enhance stormwater management.
Recommendations include completing sidewalk gaps, introducing shared-use paths for pedestrians and cyclists, a bicycle boulevard, reducing lane widths and enhancing key crossings with better-marked crosswalks and safer intersections.
With grant funds received from Mid-America Regional Council’s Planning Sustainable Places Program, the City worked with a consulting team to develop the plan. The planning process spanned 12 months and included input from various stakeholders and public feedback.
The study area covers a 2.5-mile segment of 79th Street between Lamar Avenue and Frontage Road, extending a quarter mile on either side.
The Community Development Committee previously recommended City Council endorsement of the 79th Street Corridor Plan on Aug. 7.
The plan is a guide for future development proposals and capital improvement projects within the corridor. Updates will be provided as the project moves forward.
