Overland Park residents, visitors and others can share their priorities for this important position via an anonymous online survey.
The survey is open now and will be available through Sunday, June 16.
May 13: The City of Overland Park is beginning a process to hear from the community about its next Chief of Police.
The City has selected an executive recruiting firm to lead a national search for Overland Park’s next police chief.
Public Sector Search and Consulting and City staff will meet with community leaders in the coming weeks to develop a talent profile for the position.
The talent profile will provide applicants with an understanding of the job duties and the community’s priorities for the Police Department.
“It is extremely important that we engage the community to learn what residents and visitors want in a Police Department leader,” said City Manager Lori Curtis Luther. “Police officers earn public support by living our community’s values. I am eager to hear their thoughts and begin our search in earnest.”
Under Overland Park’s Mayor-Council-Manager form of government, the hiring of City staff, including the police chief, is the city manager’s authority.
The project team will meet with representatives from community organizations, neighborhood groups and the community at-large.
The search firm will ask community members to share the values and skills they find important in a police department leader.
After the team develops the talent profile, City Manager Lori Curtis Luther will work with a panel to interview and select the next police chief from among the pool of candidates.
