Rooted in Arbor Day celebration; Two opportunities to receive free seedlings this month

Join us in celebrating Arbor Day by taking home a free tree or shrub seedling! Contribute to OP’s unbe-leaf-able greenery at two events this month: 

Saturday, April 6 at 9 a.m.
Multiple Locations

The City of Overland Park and the Legacy of Greenery Committee will hand out free tree and shrub seedlings to Overland Park residents on Saturday, April 6 at the following locations:

  • Thompson Park, 8045 Santa Fe Drive
  • Tomahawk Ridge Community Center, 11902 Lowell Avenue
  • Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, 8909 W. 179th Street

Seedlings will be available while supplies last, limit three per family. 

Shrubs:

  • Buttonbush
  • Common lilac
  • Elderberry
  • Golden currant
  • Common ninebark
  • Fragrant sumac

Trees:

  • Shortleaf pine
  • Kentucky coffeetree
  • Black Hills spruce
  • Oriental arborvitae
  • Persimmon
  • Redbud

Saturday, April 27 at 9 a.m.
Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, 8909 W. 179th Street

The Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens will distribute free tree and shrub seedlings on a first-come, first-served basis on Saturday, April 27, beginning at 9 a.m. Each household may receive up to two seedlings. Arboretum volunteers will also be available to provide planting tips and advice. 

Available Seedlings:

  • Rocky Mountain Juniper, Juniperus scopulorum
  • Peking Cotoneaster, Cotoneaster acuifolius
  • Chokecherry, Prunus virginiana
  • Button Bush, Cephalanthus occidentalis
  • Sandhill Plum, Prunus angustifolia
  • Red Mulberry, Morus rubra
  • Lilac, Syringa vulgaris
  • Elderberry, Sambucus nigra
  • Common Ninebark Physocarpus opulifoius
  • American Plum, Prunus americana
