College and Metcalf study
Public Information Meeting
BHC Corporate Office
7101 College Blvd. #400
Jan. 25 at 6 p.m.
The City is beginning a study to spur reinvestment in the College and Metcalf area. The goal of the study is to provide a more flexible mixed-use zoning code for the area between I-435 and 119th Street, Metcalf Ave. to Nall Ave.
A potential overlay district could allow for more housing, retail, restaurant uses and recreational amenities in existing developed sites and on available undeveloped land.
“A new overlay district can be a key component to strengthen Overland Park’s economy by looking at density, livability and walkability,” said Planning and Development Services Director Leslie Karr. ”One way to support expanded prosperity is by providing flexible design and zoning standards that allow a variety and mix of land uses and encourage opportunities for economic growth. We hope the public, especially within the overlay area, will join us for this public information meeting to learn more and share their ideas.”
The study will also examine transportation types within the district.
The project team will make a short presentation at 6:15 p.m., and attendees can view displays to learn more and give input.
The City is studying the area in coordination with the Mid-America Regional Council and a consultant team of RDG Planning & Design, BHC and Venice Communications.
79th Street corridor
Open House
Matt Ross Community Center
8101 Marty St.
Jan. 24 from 4–6 p.m.
The City is taking the next step to improve the 79th Street Corridor, sharing conceptual plans with the community.
This will be an opportunity for the community to view initial concepts for the corridor based on the first round of public engagement, and share comments before the plan is finalized.
This is the second round of public engagement for the 79th St. Corridor Plan Study.
The plan will consider ways to make 79th Street a safer and more inviting place for pedestrians, cyclists, and users of all abilities.
The City held an initial public open house in November of 2023 to educate the public on the study and gather initial ideas.
“This is a unique opportunity to envision a more inviting 79th Street and entrance to downtown Overland Park that better accommodates pedestrians, cyclists, and other modes of transportation,” said Brian Jackson, senior planner for the City of Overland Park. “It is crucial that the community has an opportunity to learn more about the initial concepts and share their thoughts and ideas to help make this a true community plan and vision.”
