OP Moves: June 2023 sales tax election for streets, traffic

In June 2023, Overland Park residents will consider a sales tax dedicated to the maintenance and construction of the City’s transportation infrastructure.

While the City carefully monitors and maintains Overland Park’s more 2,000 lane miles of streets and associated traffic safety devices, additional investment in transportation infrastructure will ensure that the streets, bridges, and sidewalks Overland Park residents depend on remain in safe working condition for decades to come.

Beginning in June, registered Overland Park voters will receive mail ballots asking to vote “yes” or “no” on a sales tax of three-eighths of one cent.

If voters approve, the funding will not only allow the City to invest in the safety and longevity of Overland Park’s vital transportation systems, but also allow Overland Park to pursue sustainable methods for infrastructure repair and maintenance.

A dedicated one-eighth center sales tax has historically funded improving streets and traffic management systems in Overland Park. The initial tax was approved by voters in 1998 and has been renewed three times since. The current sales tax is set to expire in March 2024.

If approved, the three-eighth cent sales tax would begin in April 2024.

The additional funding would support a more comprehensive infrastructure rehabilitation and reconstruction plan.

Revenue from the increase will allow the City to proactively address the growing needs of the City’s aging infrastructure, pursue long term solutions to key traffic safety problems, and ensure the City can financially support environmentally responsible methods of infrastructure improvement.

The Johnson County Election Commission will begin sending mail-in ballots to all registered Overland Park voters beginning in June 2023. Visit the OP Moves webpage for more information.
