Strang Park reopens Friday with community celebration

Strang Park will officially open Friday, Oct. 14 with a reopening celebration for neighbors, City staff, elected officials and the community.

The City completely renovated the 11-acre park at 89th and Farley, which has been closed since last fall.

Park improvements include:

  • Overland Park’s first inclusive playground, featuring a 30-foot tower and slide, a sensory tunnel, climbing cargo nets, in-ground trampolines and more;
  • A separate toddler playground featuring whimsical Farmers’ Market-themed play structures and a nature play area;
  • Family-friendly restrooms;
  • A gaming promenade with cornhole, checkerboard tables and oversized lawn chess;
  • A vibrant mural by local artist Phil “Sike Style” Shafer, featuring uplifting imagery;
  • Inspiring words throughout the park from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech;
  • An updated shade plaza featuring the original railroad tracks from the Strang Line;
  • New tennis and basketball courts;
  • A loop trail;
  • Greenspace; and more.

The updated park is located directly behind the newly-renovated Johnson County Central Resource Library. It adds a brand new amenity to an area along 87th Street featuring recent private reinvestment and development.

The City invites the community to a reopening celebration with snacks, music, photo opportunities and more, at Strang Park on Friday, Oct. 14 at 2 p.m.
