Trash Haulers

Residential trash removal and recycling services are provided by private companies in Overland Park.

Requirements for Haulers

Each company has its own prices and policies, but trash haulers in Overland Park are required to have permits and provide:

  • Standard trash removal services,
  • Curbside recycling of recyclable household waste excluding glass,
  • Yard waste removal, including grass clippings, leaves, and small tree trimming debris. Yard waste must be bundled in lawn bags, plastic bags will not be picked up. Haulers collect yard waste at least 40 weeks per year.

Requirements for Residents

Trash, recycling, and yard waste should be placed at the curb, not in the street or on the sidewalk, the morning of collection day. Trash and recycling containers should be returned from the curb within 24 hours of pickup.

2022 Ordinance Update

Hauler-issued trash and recycling containers may be stored within two feet of any side of your home. No screening is required. Any additional containers, however, must be screened from view or stored inside your garage.

The previous ordinance required all containers be screened or stored inside your garage. Current hauler-issued containers are often too large to be kept inside garages and can be challenging to screen.

Homeowners associations may have additional screening requirements.

Neither Overland Park nor Johnson County operate a public landfill; however, residents can use one of these two sites to drop off unwanted items.
