In 1998, Overland Park conducted a citywide election, asking voters to approve a 1/8 cent sales tax for a five-year period for the purpose of funding the construction of residential neighborhood streets and thoroughfares.
Voters approved the sales tax, effective April 1, 1999. Over the first five years of the sales tax, more than $21.5 million was collected. The tax expired March 31, 2004.
In 2003, voters approved the renewal of the 1/8 cent sales tax. It went into effect April 1, 2004 and will expire on March 31, 2009. Nearly $29 million is expected to be collected through March 31, 2009.
If reauthorized on Jan. 29, the 1/8 cent sales tax would expire March 31, 2014.
