Indian creek flood study

The Indian Creek Flood Study is a major review of Indian Creek and its tributaries. We are using it to inform people of their flood risk. FEMA also will be using it to update its Flood Insurance Rate Maps.

This study, one of eight conducted countywide, was a collaborative effort between Johnson County and the cities of Overland Park, Olathe, Leawood, Lenexa and Prairie Village.

Maps of the proposed floodplains were available for viewing at an Open House in October 2006. Maps also are available online.

The flood studies are all awaiting final adoption by FEMA, and should be available in early 2009.

Letters were mailed to more than 3,000 property owners in the three cities who live near an area that has been studied. Letters include information on the future flood status of individual buildings and homes.

Most buildings next to Indian Creek and its tributaries have been found to be outside the 100-year floodplain.
