The Board of Zoning Appeals is a seven-member, non-partisan, volunteer body whose members are appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council. The members serve three-year terms and can be re-appointed for consecutive terms.
This board hears requests for variances, appeals and exceptions from city zoning ordinances:
- Variance – Request to make some type of change to the property that deviates from the normal requirements of the city’s zoning regulations;
- Appeal – Request to have the board modify an interpretation of the zoning requirements made by the city staff; or
- Nonconforming Situation Permit – Request to allow an existing structure that does not meet current requirements to remain unchanged even though other structures on the site are being redeveloped.
