Board of Zoning Appeals

The Board of Zoning Appeals is a seven-member, non-partisan, volunteer body whose members are appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council. The members serve three-year terms and can be re-appointed for consecutive terms.

This board hears requests for variances, appeals and exceptions from city zoning ordinances:

  1. Variance – Request to make some type of change to the property that deviates from the normal requirements of the city’s zoning regulations;
  2. Appeal – Request to have the board modify an interpretation of the zoning requirements made by the city staff; or
  3. Nonconforming Situation Permit – Request to allow an existing structure that does not meet current requirements to remain unchanged even though other structures on the site are being redeveloped.

Meetings are generally held in the Council Chamber of City Hall (map) on the second Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. The board holds public hearings on each agenda item.

If you need any accommodation for the meeting, please contact Leslie Karr, 913/895-6190 (Kansas Relay Service 1-800-766-3777). Please give 48 hours notice.
